San José, CA Youth Commission Opening

YOUTHS SOUGHT: San Jose is trying to fill five openings on the Youth Commission, which advises the city council on issues and polices involving young people. Applicants must be from ages 14 to 20 at the time of the appointment and must live in city council districts 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Sept. 30.

Funding Opportunities

Verizon Grant Helps Train Recovering Addicts

Workforce-development grants awarded by Verizon Communications will provide computer-literacy training to people in recovery from addiction who are looking to reenter the job market.

The telecommunications firm recently announced that the Verizon Foundation gave a total of $525,000 in grants to 14 nonprofits in New York state. One of the awardees was the Lower East Side Service Center, which received $40,000 for its computer training program.

Another $40,000 grant, to Odyssey Foundation of New York, will provide basic workforce-development aid to clients in Harlem.

Other grants supported job-retention, vocational, and disability programs.

RWJF Has Smoke-Free Families Funding

Researchers exploring smoking by pregnant women with an eye on getting them to quit can apply for funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Smoke Free Families: Innovations to Stop Smoking During and Beyond Pregnancy program.

Up to $3 million will be awarded over two years for up to five observational studies, seven pilot studies, and up to five new-investigator dissertation awards. Funding will support studies that increase knowledge about maternal cigarette smoking and support development of stop-smoking interventions.

Application deadline is Aug. 26.

Political Reform, Economic and Social Justice Targeted
State Strategies Fund

The State Strategies Fund is a collaborative grantmaking program supporting innovative state-level strategies to increase civic participation in political life, empower underrepresented constituencies, and promote political reform. The Fund supports permanent state-based coalitions that have a long-term strategy for uniting diverse constituencies with a grassroots base and that have a common vision for economic and social justice. Priority is given to coalitions promoting citizen participation in key policy arenas such as campaign finance reform, fair tax policy, affordable health care, and the environment. Applications are due August 27, 2003. (The Fund prefers applications to be submitted via email.) Visit the website for more information.

Grants for Public Interest Litigation
The Impact Fund

The Impact Fund is a public charity designed to provide funding for public interest litigation that will potentially benefit a large number of people, lead to significant law reform, or raise the public consciousness. The Fund makes grants of up to $25,000 to pay for out-of-pocket costs and expenses of substantial class action and impact cases. Grants are made in the general areas of poverty law, environmental justice, elimination of discrimination, and civil and human rights. In addition, the board has designated specific priorities in the criminal or immigration, education access, and equity areas. The Fund does not support traditional environmental (i.e. wilderness, general pollution claims) or civil liberties cases, such as First Amendment claims. Also, international claims are not funded unless they involve United States government or corporate conduct. Nonprofit organizations, private attorneys, and firms are eligible to apply. The next deadline for pre-applications is August 27, 2003, and full applications are due on September 4, 2003. Visit the website above for details.

Applicants for Federal Grants Need a DUNS Number
Data Universal Numbering System

In order to improve the statistical reporting of federal grants and cooperative agreements, the Office of Management and Budget has directed all federal agencies to require all applicants for federal grants to provide a Dun and Bradstreet (D&B) Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) number when applying for Federal grants or cooperative agreements on or after October 1, 2003. The DUNS number will be required whether an applicant is submitting a paper application or an electronic application. Visit the website above for more information.

Paid FAA Internships Available

The  Federal  Aviation  Administration  (FAA)  is targeted recruiting Asian Pacific  Americans,  Native Americans, and students with disabilities for a paid  internship  in our William J. Hughes Technological Center in Atlantic City,  New  Jersey.   Please distribute the following information to your students to encourage eligible candidates to apply for the Fall of 2003.

Several paid internships will be open in the Fall for seniors, or graduates majoring in mechanical engineering.  The internships  will  be  in the research  and  development division at our William J. Hughes Technological Center  in  New  Jersey.  The three-month internship is a flexible training that gives students and graduates a firsthand experience in working with the FAA.  The internships also allows an opportunity to explore careers in the field of aviation, and may lead to a full-time position.  Interns will receive stipend, travel expenses, and housing assistance.

Applicants  must  be  a  U.S. citizen and have completed at least 90 credit hours  from a U.S. accredited college or university with a cumulative grade point  average  (GPA)  of  3.0  or higher on a scale of 4.0. Strong writing skills are desirable for these positions as they will do report on R & D.
